Latest ThinkPads stay thin, add stackable accessories

ThinkPad is a name with some history behind it that shows no signs of slowing down, even after two decades, the sale of the laptop and tablet line to Lenovo from IBM, and Apple's more successful co-opting of the word "pad" as a suffix in the name of its hit tablet. To kick off CES 2015 in Las Vegas this week, Lenovo announced a refresh of its 14-inch ThinkPad ultrabook and the ThinkPad Stack, a collection of stackable accessories to increase the capabilities of a tablet or notebook.

Lenovo claims that 100 million ThinkPad units have been sold since the original ThinkPad 700 debuted back in the early 1990s. That first successful ancestor of today's ThinkPads (which followed an early tablet PC that flopped) weighed almost 6 lb (2.7 kg) and boasted a 25 MHz CPU and a monochrome 640x480 display, all for just a few thousand dollars back in 1992.

By comparison, the latest generation ThinkPad X1 Carbon unveiled today weighs half as much, will retail for US$1,249 when released later this month and runs off a fifth-generation Intel core processor more powerful than that original ThinkPad by at least two orders of magnitude. The full portfolio of 2015 ThinkPad models will be available starting in February with prices ranging from $599 to $1,149.

Aside from bumps in specs and battery life, particularly on the X1 Carbon, there's nothing very new about the new ThinkPads, but Lenovo did introduce an interesting new accessory called the ThinkPad Stack.

The ThinkPad Stack is part mobile office, part Legos, consisting of a stackable, inter-locking suite of accessories with the same length and width. The first four Stack devices include a 10,000 mAh power bank unit, a 1 TB USB 3.0 hard drive unit, a wireless access point that allows multiple devices to connect to a private network, and a Bluetooth speaker with 2 x 2 W multi-coil speakers. Sounds like a dream come true for the peripatetic productivity obsessed who like to mix and match.

For those who like to anchor their mobile office when not on the go, Lenovo also introduced a new thin, tabletop HD panel display in the form of the ThinkVision X24, which features an IPS panel with a 23.8-inch borderless screen that's just 7.5 mm thin.

The ThinkVision X24 and ThinkPad Stack will be available in April, with the Stack components available individually at varying prices and the ThinkVision X24 starting at $249.

Introducing Your Baby to New Fruits and Vegetables

When your baby has mastered the very fine purees and simple flavors most often introduced as the first solid foods, it's time to start incorporating new flavors into your baby's diet. When your baby starts to enjoy more variety, it's time to think outside of the box. Get beyond the typical apples and bananas and offer your baby some different and often overlooked fruits and vegetables that offer up tons of nutrition and plenty of flavor.

Avocados. Avocados are an excellent early food for babies. They have a silky, smooth texture that only requires fork mashing, rather than real pureeing. The mild flavor is very often a hit with babies, and avocados are loaded with the good fat that babies need.

Kiwi. Kiwi also has a naturally soft texture so it is easy to mash to the correct consistency for your baby. While kiwis may be a little sour for your baby at first, they are a wonderful source of vitamin C.

Melons. Melons such as cantaloupe, honeydew, and watermelon are great fruits for your baby to try. Again, they have a naturally soft texture so they are easy to chew. Cantaloupe is packed with vitamins A and C. Honeydew is also a great source of vitamin C and watermelon has lycopene, vitamin C, and vitamin A.

Cherries. Bing cherries, chopped into tiny pieces, are another great fruit for your baby to try. Cherries provide vitamin C and potassium.

Broccoli. Because of the naturally firm texture of broccoli, it is sometimes overlooked as a baby food. Removing the florets and chopping them finely, however, makes broccoli a great vegetable to mix in with another puree such as carrots. Broccoli is a nutritional powerhouse providing vitamin C, fiber, iron, calcium, potassium, and folate. The gassiness that broccoli often gives adults, typically does not translate to babies.

Spinach. Spinach can be pureed alone or mixed with other purees. Because it has a rather strong flavor, your baby may like it better when mixed with something else. Spinach is packed with nutrients including Vitamin A, C, magnesium, folate, and iron.

Summer Squash. Your baby probably already likes butternut or acorn squash, but what about yellow summer squash? This vegetable provides vitamin C and has a mild flavor that many babies love. Just make sure you leave the skin on and chop it very finely.

Corn. Corn too is often overlooked as a vegetable because it is sometimes considered to be a grain. But with vitamin C and fiber, and a naturally sweet taste, corn can be a nice addition to your baby's diet. Be sure your baby is accustomed to chewing before trying smashed corn kernels.

Tomatoes. Tomatoes are acidic so make sure your baby is a little older (8 or 9 months) before incorporating tomatoes into his diet. Chopped tomato makes a great finger food. Tomatoes are full of lycopene, vitamins A and C, and potassium.

When feeding your baby make sure you consider all that your grocery store produce section has to offer, not just the same old fruits and vegetables. Introducing your baby to plenty of new flavors from a young age will help her to be open to new foods for a lifetime, and will give her the ultimate in good nutrition.

The mechanical masterpiece was built by BSA for the 1956 Earls Court (London) Motorcycle Show, the world's most important at the time – the cutaway BSA Gold Star is electrically driven to show movement of the engine internals, wheels and suspension.

A 60-year-old, fully-functioning "cutaway" BSA Gold Star motorcycle looks set to become one of the stars of the coming auction season for collectible motorcycles, which gets underway in Las Vegas in the first week of January.

Built by BSA for the 1956 Earls Court Motorcycle Show in London, the “living art” exhibit began with a 1956 BSA B34 Gold Star Clubman motorcycle, which was then fully sectioned and motorized to show drivetrain function, including the movements of the piston, crankshaft, clutch and valves.

If that wasn't enough, a separate electric motor drives two eccentric discs, which not only simultaneously turn the front and rear wheels, but also articulate wheel and suspension movement.

Static sectioned parts include the petrol tank, the oil tank, the toolbox, gearbox and front fork legs – even the Lucas horn! Brakes are also sectioned and the rear suspension damper bodies are reproduced in clear Lucite to show the flow of their oil supply when working.

Originally built for the 1953 Earls Court show and based on the 1953 CB model, the exhibit was completely updated to for the iconic (and then new) DB/DBD model Gold Star for the 1956 show.

The life journey of this fully functioning exhibit and a host of other cutaway models after their show days is predictably obtuse, but Bob Schanz, owner of DomiRacer vintage bikes and parts in Cincinnati, Ohio, was surprised to discover the cutaway Goldie in the motorcycle shop of Rod Coleman in New Zealand in 1986.

Long-term negotiations ensued as the Colemans were reluctant sellers, but Schanz persisted and eventually the BSA display stand became the pride of his collection and was on display at DomiRacer Distributors in Cincinatti, Ohio for a long time.

In Schanz's care, lettering on the base was redone in time for the BSA to be loaned to the AMA Museum for exhibit, but when Herb Harris acquired the display in 1999 much work needed to be done.

The BSA Gold Star exhibition stand is just one of many priceless motorcycle artifacts from the Herb Harris Collection that will go to auction at Bonhams' January sale in Las Vegas.

Harris is the Texan attorney whose love of motorcycles created the Harris Vincent Gallery, an elite rare motorcycle agency and restoration service that discovered and restored the Rollie Free Bathing Suit Bike we covered extensively in our article on the world's most valuable motorcycle last year. For many years, Harris was responsible for the world's most valuable motorcycle, which sold for US$1,000,000, and the Harris Vincent Gallery is synonymous with motorcycles of the finest quality.

Now fully operational again, the Earls Court BSA mechanism is powered by its two original British electric motors, rebuilt to plug into US 210-volt outlets. In the process, it was geared down so it now turns at approximately 9 rpm,which is half the original speed, and doubly captivating.

The investment required to create such a meticulously detailed, fully motorized and articulated display could only have been covered by a manufacturer as big as BSA, which was one of the largest motorcycle manufacturers in the world at the time. While such detailed working cutaway motorcycle displays have sometimes been displayed by Honda for significant models at important shows (usually the Tokyo Motor Show), nothing like this display exists for the pre-baby-boomer motorcycling era.

The display is expected to fetch between $250,000 and $350,000, roughly 10-20 times the price of a well restored example of the model displayed in the sectionalized masterpiece.

It will be interesting to see the contrast in the price between a perfectly restored example of the Gold Star and the sectionalized display machine, because at the same auction, from the same collection, there is what can be reasonably claimed to be a perfectly restored Gold Star.

Herb Harris purchased the BSA from the estate of its original owner in the early 1990s and a complete restoration was undertaken, with the engine farmed out to old-time BSA dealer Stovall's Cycle in Dallas for a full rebuild, using only NOS spares in the process.

Top suppliers like Ken Bell rebuilt the magneto, redid the chrome-plating, etc. The Amal 1½ in. GP carburetor was repainted in the correct factory color and remounted. A fresh seat from Britain's top saddle-maker was supplied. The Goldie's gearbox was the last NOS close-ratio RRT2 box in America, located at a shop in New Jersey.

During most of its time in Harris' care, the Gold Star enjoyed pride of place in the collection's display room, only removed for the occasional outing, including a trip to California for the old Del Mar Concours, then the top US classic bike show, where it took top honors in the super-competitive "1960s British" class.

In 2013 the BSA was chosen as one of the featured machines in "Ton Up," a Sturgis, South Dakota exhibit exploring the roots and significance of the café-racer movement.

This Gold Star, without doubt one of the best in the world, has not been run since its rebuild and presents as a fresh restoration.

It will hence be the most pertinent test yet as to the appreciation of the value of a perfect restoration of the model in its last incarnation.

Recent sales by Bonhams of BSA Gold Stars almost identical to the display stand bike illustrate the remarkable value one can achieve buying fully-restored examples at auction.

Four Amphicars go to auction in January – what will they fetch?

Four Amphicars (from top left clockwise - Mecum, Barrett-Jackson, Fort Lauderdale, Russo & Steele) go to auction in the first two weeks of 2015 with much discussion about what they will each fetch as one of the highly-prized German amphibious cars recently sold for $123,400. Gizmag has analyzed all 54 Amphicar sales of the last decade and made some sense of the market.

There are four Amphicars heading to auction during the rare car silly season in January, the most that have gone to auction at the same time for at least a decade and possibly for much longer. The big question is how much they will fetch. They sold new for between US$2800 and $3300 between 1962 and 1967, and in 2011, one of the highly-prized German amphibious cars sold for $123,400. Gizmag has analyzed all 54 Amphicar sales of the last decade in order to make some sense of the market.

Gizmag first wrote about the Amphicar a decade ago, the mass-produced German car of the sixties having come to our attention due to the spate of amphibious vehicle projects that were getting underway in the first years of the new millennium.

The Amphicar remains the only mass produced consumer amphibious car in history, but the enterprise failed, inviting the conclusion that the product was flawed, and at very least warning others against pursuing the amphibious vehicle concept.

Time magazine, once a champion of innovation, listed the Amphicar as one of its 50 worst cars of all-time. That so many Amphicars are still on American roads and deeply loved by their owners bears testimony to the contrary.

Simplistically, it's easy to understand why journalists hang the old "jack of all trades, master of none" line on a dual-purpose vehicle designed for a marketplace they are not familiar with, but the secret to amphibious success is the utility of the dual-purpose design.

All of the new crop of amphibious vehicles were inspired by the difficulties of launching and retrieving a boat, and the most desirable benefit of an amphibious craft is the complete removal of the tedious launch ritual.

Being on the water is its own reward, and the greatest barrier to enjoying that reward is the launching process – getting any boat or PWC on the water is a right royal pain in the backside. Firstly, you need to trailer it to a slipway (a purpose-built launching spot), and they aren't all that commonplace and may indeed be a long way from where you wish to enjoy your time on the boat, meet the picnicking party on shore, ad infinitum.

Then you need to launch it, and that usually requires more than one person, then secure your own vehicle against marauders, then reverse the process at the end of the enjoyment. Being on the water is such a joy though, that millions of people endure that process every day, even if it is just to sample the humble joys of a dinghy with an outboard.

Having an amphibious vehicle means you simply drive it into the water, and that means you can launch and retrieve it with zero hassle anywhere – no slipway required.

It also means that you can cross a waterway and have mobility on the other side – something you can't easily do without a platoon of people and cars, if at all. It also facilitates easy ingress and egress for passengers.

Curiously, the eccentric nature of the Amphicar makes it a celebrity magnet with owners including former American Presidents Lyndon Bain "LBJ" Johnson (pictured) and Jimmy Carter, film director George Lucas, actor/singer Madonna, actor Dan Ackroyd, country singer Alan Jackson and spoon-bender (the hard way) Uri Geller. The Amphicar has also starred in a Pepsi “Come Alive” TV commercial, "The Simpsons" TV show, music video clips for Madonna ("Burning Up") and Alan Jackson ("As She's Walking Away"), and numbers dozens of movie credits including a role alongside Peter Sellers in "Inspector Clouseau".

So much has been written about the Amphicar that it is contradictory, it is difficult to sort the fact from the fiction. Whist the Amphicar could not comply with America's tightening emission regulations after 1967, production appears to have ceased long prior to that point, and stockpiled inventory heavily discounted to move it. One source indicates that production ceased two weeks after the death of Harold Quandt (then owner of BMW and the person who financed the venture) in 1964 because the Quandt family was losing money on every car (believed to be $700 at a $3300 price in the US).

Another often quoted fact is that production volumes of 20,000 per annum were expected and the company had tooled accordingly, and quite obviously those sales never materialized as only 3,878 Amphicars were ever produced. Budgeting for 20,000 and achieving 500 a year sales is clearly a recipe for financial disaster.

The main problem appears to have been the price. When new, the Amphicar initially sold for US$3300 at a time when an MGB Roadster cost $2,659, a Triumph TR3 $2,700, a Pontiac GTO went for $3,225, and an Austin Healey 3000 cost just $100 more at $3,400. In Germany, the Amphicar sold for DM10,500 putting it in a luxury vehicle category for the normally adventurous and outdoorsy German populace. As a sports car, the Amphicar's appeal in the V8-oriented American marketplace was distinctly limited by the anemic four cylinder 1147cc engine which it shared with the Triumph Herald.

When sales didn't materialize as hoped in the US, the price was progressively discounted to a low of $2,800, but EPA regulations were the final hurdle that could not be overcome. Of the 3,878 Amphicars produced, 3,046 were exported to the United States, which means American sales accounted for 78.5 percent of the Amphicar's total production.

Since that article a decade ago, dozens of amphibious vehicle manufacturers have sprung up across the globe.

Water covers 71 percent of the earth's surface, and many areas are a mosaic of water and land. With 90 percent of humanity living on or near the water, it makes sense to have a vehicle that is at home in both environments, and we can count more than two dozen makers of amphibious vehicles in 2015 and expect more to follow.

Two manufacturers which were getting underway when we first wrote about the Amphicar – Gibbs and Sealegs – have since developed international dealer networks and are manufacturing in quantity, both emanating from the water-challenged environment in New Zealand.

The military could see the obvious need for being able to seamlessly transition from land to water and back again, but it took amphibious-obsessed German industrial designer Hans Trippel (1908-2001) to get the peacetime Amphicar afloat.

Trippel built his first amphibious vehicle in 1932, building numerous prototypes through the 1930s, presenting his SG-6 prototype to Adolf Hitler in 1936 and receiving a significant grant for development and initial production. When Germany occupied France during WWII, Trippel was put in charge of the Bugatti factory at Molsheim, which was renamed Trippelwerke, and produced more than 200 vehicles for the German military.

Though the Trppelwerke SG-6 was produced in the hundreds, Ferdinand Porsche's Volkswagen Schwimmenwagen was more functional, cheaper (by half) and was produced in much greater quantities. More Type166 Schwimmenwagens were produced than any other amphibious vehicle in history though they were all part of the German WWII war effort and very few survive today.

Trippel continued building amphibious vehicles until the beginning of this century, though none were ever produced in the quantities of the Amphicar. Numerous Trippel prototypes and some production vehicles are pictured on the Amphibious Vehicle and Amphicars site.

Firstly, there has been a lot of uninformed information spread about the Amphicar on the internet. Only one Amphicar has ever sold at auction for more than $100,000 and that was the car of country music superstar Alan Jackson (the Fjord Green car above), a provenance we believe influenced the stellar price at auction, which can be seen here on video. The car also appeared in at least one of Jackson's music videos and regularly attended Amphicar get-togethers in its owner's care, as Jackson is an Amphicar enthusiast. The hammer fell at $112,000 but with all fees included, the final cost to the buyer was $123,200. All the above prices are calculated the same way (total buy price).

The second (above) and third (below) highest prices ever achieved for an Amphicar were both for near perfect restorations – cars which were effectively in "as new" and probably better than new condition.

Next, it doesn't matter what year an Amphicar is classified as, because they're pretty much all the same and the model year is really only the year it was sold.

Four Amphicars go to auction in January – what will they fetch?

Amphicar prices are not skyrocketing. Our analysis suggests they began to skyrocket prior to the Global Financial Crisis and unlike the overall rare car market, which recovered several years ago and is going on to unprecedented highs, the prices of Amphicars are only just recovering to pre-2008 levels. No, there's not a lot of data to work with but it's all we've got, and it suggests that apart from the provenance-enhanced Jackson sale in 2011, the market was at its peak just prior to the GFC.

So they're not skyrocketing, but they can be reasonably expected to appreciate consistently from here onwards if they follow the rest of the collectible car marketplace.

Finally, Barrett-Jackson clearly sells more Amphicars for higher prices than any other auction house. This might be because it specializes in them, and hence owners of better vehicles go to Barrett-Jackson, or it might be because Barrett-Jackson does an awesome job of creating hype around its auctions with the use of clever marketing and a huge television audience. Nearly all the cars at the top of the list were sold at televised auctions, which obviously means that if you're a seller, sell your car at a televised auction, and if you're a buyer, you may buy better at an auction which isn't televised.

Is the Amphicar the solution to your problem?

But wait, there's one more thing. One of the things you'll see written everywhere on the internet is that the Amphicar is the only mass-production amphibious vehicle ever made for the domestic market. That was true, but with the accelerating success of both Sealegs and Gibbs Technologies, it probably isn't true any longer, and there are many road registerable amphibious solutions out there these days. The question to be asked now, is whether you wish to have a vintage amphibian with a thriving network of fellow enthusiasts (primarily inside the United States) that gets together for amphibious adventure and friendship on a regular basis, or whether you want an amphibious vehicle for other reasons/needs.

If the latter is the case, then a whole range of possibilities open up. There are far more modern, reliable, time-, hassle- and cost-efficient solutions for amphibious needs than the Amphicar, which many people will argue is a slow and cantankerous antique.

The most obvious is the Gibbs Quadski which has been available for many years as a single seater, now offers a dual seat, and is fast developing a global dealer network.

I got my first good look at one of these at the recent Kings Cup, the world's richest race event for Personal Water Craft, and it impressed me considerably. With an MSRP of US$42,800, the Quadski runs out a fair bit cheaper than the average Amphicar (average price at auction of the 54 listed above is US$54,781) and can be expected to be cheaper and easier to maintain. By the same nomenclature (the 770 designation of the Amphicar stands for 7 mph on water and 70 mph on land), the Quadski would be a 4545 as it will do 45 mph on water and on land. It will also be far more durable in sand, salt water, and over rough terrain.

The Southampton #LettuceOnMars experiment

When the first living visitor from Earth lands on Mars we might well expect it to be a man or a woman, but if students from the University of Southampton Spaceflight Society have their way, it could be one small step for a lettuce. That may seem more than a bit mad, but its part of an experiment to see if crops can grow in the Martian environment as a prelude to colonization.

If Mars is ever going to be colonized, the pioneers are going to have to learn to live off the land. Shipping food, water, air, spare parts, and the other necessities of life would be insanely expensive, and a completely self-contained habitat, even if feasible, misses the point of colonization and might as well be built in the Gobi Desert or Antarctica. A truly success colony will need, for example, to use the Martian air and the Martian sunlight to grow crops.

Developed by a team of under and postgraduate students as part of an international competition sponsored by the Mars One group, the Southampton #LettuceOnMars experiment consists of a small greenhouse that will be able to grow lettuces using the atmosphere and sunlight on Mars. The goal is to demonstrate that it is feasible to grow crops on Mars with an open-ended technology that uses Martian resources rather than the closed systems used in gardening experiments on the International Space Station or relying on materials sent from Earth.

The greenhouse consists of an aircraft-grade aluminum case with a polycarbonate dome, which is curved to prevent to accumulation of dust in the event of a storm, blocks the hard UV radiation from the Sun, and acts as a bioshield to separate the growing area from the outside world. In addition, the experiment also includes pumps for pressurizing the extremely thin Martian atmosphere; filters to keep out dust; a heater; supplies of water, nutrients, and pH balancing chemicals; and a bank of UV lamps.

The latter is particularly important because the sunlight on Mars is only half as bright as it is on Earth. On the best days, it only reaches the level of an overcast winter's day, so LEDs designed to shed a narrow spectrum of light to promote growth will be used as a supplement.

So why choose the common lettuce? According to the Southampton team, it is because lettuce is often used in growing experiments, has already flown in space several times, is edible, grows quickly from hardy seed, and is compact.

At the beginning of the mission, the experiment, if selected, will be inactive and the lettuce seeds frozen into a state of dormancy for the seven-month voyage to the Red Planet on the Mars One unmanned lander in 2018. The landing area has yet to be determined, but Mars One says it will be in a band covering the ancient Martian seabeds that now form the northern plains of Mars between 40⁰ and 50⁰ latitude. This is regarded as an area for a future colony because the air pressure is slightly higher than in the uplands.

On the surface, the greenhouse will be heated to 21⁰ to 24⁰ C (70⁰ to 75⁰ F), then pressurized using the Martian atmosphere combined with nutrient-laced water vapor and oxygen generated by electrolysis. Once the seeds have germinated, the twilight-like Martian sunlight will be supplemented by the LEDs as cameras and sensors track the growth of the lettuces over a four week period. After the experiment is complete, the heating unit will be turned up to high to kill the lettuces and destroy and living organisms that might be in the greenhouse to avoid contaminating the Martian environment.

"To live on other planets we need to grow food there. No-one has ever actually done this and we intend to be the first," says project leader Suzanna Lucarotti. "This plan is both technically feasible and incredibly ambitious in its scope, for we will be bringing the first complex life to another planet. Growing plants on other planets is something that needs to be done, and will lead to a wealth of research and industrial opportunities that our plan aims to bring to the University of Southampton. We have tackled diverse sets of engineering challenges, including aeroponic systems, bio filters, low power gas pressurization systems and failsafe planetary protection systems and then integrated them all into one payload on a tight mass, power and cost budget."

The #LettuceOnMars project is one of ten university team finalists vying for a spot on the Mars One's unmanned lander, which is scheduled to touch down in 2018. According to the team, the Southampton experiment has passed the technical review and is now awaiting the results of a popular online vote, which ended on December 31.
